The Organisation - Background and Development

WearAble was established in December 2001 by its parent organisation, Sunderland Support for Parents with Disabilities, It was set up to support disabled people , raise awareness of disability issues and encourage disabled people to make choices about a healthier lifestyle

WearAble is managed by disabled people, individuals who have family members who are disabled or carers, as well as local people who are interested in disability issues.

In December 2003 WearAble took its first step to independence when it appointed its new Board of Management. This was followed in January 2004 by a successful application for company status. Eight months later WearAble became a registered Charity.
