The Organisation - Background and Development
WearAble was established in December 2001 by its parent organisation, Sunderland Support for Parents with Disabilities, It was set up to support disabled people , raise awareness of disability issues and encourage disabled people to make choices about a healthier lifestyle
WearAble is managed by disabled people, individuals who have family members who are disabled or carers, as well as local people who are interested in disability issues.
In December 2003 WearAble took its first step to independence when it appointed its new Board of Management. This was followed in January 2004 by a successful application for company status. Eight months later WearAble became a registered Charity.

Mission statement
Wearable is established to reduce the barriers for people with disabilities to health, training and educational opportunities to raise awareness of disability issues.
WearAble strives to empower people with disabilities, their families and carers
to make informed choices about their health and well being and to access services.
